Our origin Story
How do we turn Black Soldier Fly farming from a niche concept into a globally scalable solution for waste, food, and soil challenges?
What began as a research project between two friends at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 2022 quickly turned into a deep fascination with Black Soldier Flies—and the business models behind them. Our founder became obsessed with one question: What makes or breaks a BSF operation?
Armed with a background in business and engineering, we set out to find the missing link—the key knowledge, science, and technologies that could turn Black Soldier Flies from a promising concept into a global powerhouse for waste management, sustainable protein, and regenerative agriculture.
We believe LarvaTek.org is the first link in that missing chain—and our community members will help us build the rest.
Our Process
How We Create, Test, and Share with the Community
1. Design
We design open-access equipment, facilities, software, and business tools centered around Black Soldier Fly operations. Each solution is crafted to meet the needs of real farmers and entrepreneurs at different scales and budgets—from backyard setups to full-scale commercial systems.
2. Test
We rigorously build and test everything we design. Our focus is value-added impact—not just more tools, but smarter ones. Every product we launch is vetted for ROI, practicality, and relevance in the field.
3. Share
Once proven, we share everything under an open-source license—blueprints, code, instructions, and data. You’re free to replicate, modify, and improve them. Together, we move faster, build smarter, and lower the barrier to entry for BSF entrepreneurs everywhere.
